"Eduardo Avaroa" National Andean Reserve was created in 1973. It has a surface of 714,745 H. It lies in the southwest of the district of Potosi at 4,000 meters above sea level. This tourist site attracts around 30.000 visitors a year.
The Reserve is located in a region of irregular relief with extensive plains and highlands. Its Andean mountains are the highest of the border line with Chile and Argentina. In the west, they are surrounded by a group of volcanic mounds (Western Mountain Range). There are active volcanoes, spring waters, steaming geysers and fumaroles, which cause the Reserve to bear a resemblance to Yellowstone Park in the United States.
There are about 190 species of plants and trees that grow in extreme conditions. They have adapted to the lack of sweet water and nutrients, as well as to the low temperature. The vegetation is characterized by the presence of dry straw pastures. In places where there is more humidity, you can find "thola" and in some rocky streams "keñua", as well as "yareta", which is used as fuel by the villagers. These species are
in danger of extinction.
There are around 80 species of animals, among which we should highlight flamingos (Andean, Chilean and James). These are perhaps the main attraction of the Reserve. There are also Andean geese, hawks, ducks and "ñandus" (kind of small ostrich incapable of flying) There are also 23 species of mammals like pumas, Andean foxes and "vizcachas", in addition to certain species in danger of extinction, such as vicuña, suri, and Andean condor. They are all sheltered in the Reserve.
The best month to visit this Reserve is November because of the presence of numerous flamingos and the good weather conditions. This area of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve has a predominantly volcanic landscape with masses of dry acid lava, such as those of Ollague, among others.
