Sucre is the constitutional capital city of Bolivia. Currently, the government seat is settled in La Paz, where the executive and legislative powers are. However, Sucre maintains the Justice Supreme Court seat, as well as being the capital of the Department of Chuquisaca. Sucre has a population of about 190.000 inhabitants. It is located in the southern part of the country, at an altitude of 2.800 m. above sea level. Historically, the city has been known as Charcas, La Plata, The White City and Chuquisaca.
The city attracts thousands of tourists every year due to its ancient buildings in the centre, which are really well preserved. Other attractions involve palaeontologic tracks found in the surroundings of the city. Besides, there are also several libraries, churches and historical documents, such as the first Argentinian flag, kept inside the Liberty House, near the "Prefectura" - local government -. Sucre was named seat of Bolivarian Games, which will take place in 2009.
