It is a beautiful building, which was built by the Jesuit Order in 1630 for San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca University, the most important in South America after Lima University in Peru.
From 1825 to 1899, it was seat of the Congress of Senators and Representatives. The most important remains are kept in the Independence hall, where the Constituent Assembly proclaimed Bolivia as an independent Republic on August 6th 1825.
