De la Merced Church
This church was founded in the middle of the 16th century by the Order of Mercedarian Priests. It stands out mainly for the High Altar carved in cedar, and seven golden altar pieces. One of them is considered the most ancient of the Audiencia de Charcas. Among other elements, we quote the baroque pulpit and the famous painting signed by the Bolivian painting Melchor Perez de Holguin.
La Recoleta Monastery - Sucre
Located in the slopes of Churuquella hill, the Franciscan Monastery was founded in 1600 by brother Francisco Morales. The church was rebuilt in the 19th century in one single nave with a side chapel. The façade, flanked by two twin towers, has a pilaster gate. The High Altar does not have an altar piece. However, both of the lower altars have a new gothic style and correspond to this century. The high choir of the church shows a set of chairs carved in cedar wood in a baroque flowered style that dates from the 17th century (1675).
The Monastery consists of three cloisters, plus an extra one known as the orange tree courtyard. Currently, there is a museum in the third cloister. It is managed by the Franciscan Order. There we can find paintings, sculptures, religious works and a numismatic collection from the Colony and the Republic. The library was organized from 1837 onwards. At present, it has 20.000 volumes concerning a wide range of topics. Among the attractions of this convent, we can also mention the millennial tree, declared National and Historical Monument in 1956. It is about 1.400 years old and it stands in the orchard of the Monastery.

The building of this church started in 1795 and ended in 1800. There are two towers on its narrow front. This building, with a very particular shape, consists of stone walls, whose boulders were brought from the Churuquella hill. The main cloister has the most important colonial courtyard in the city, where the arches appeared built in two levels.
Among other relevant levels in this building is the church terrace, in which there is a set of chairs carved from stone. From this place, there is a nice view of the city. The gardens are beautiful, as they are full of roses. There are also outstanding paintings that hang from the walls along the Monastery.
